Leaf Relief Series  ( Paintings Gallery 1 )

My friend Pat requested one of these ( aptly named "Pat's Leaf" ) for her ( soon to be "Best of Philly" ) garden

in the Northeast. It was truly amazing how the piece and the garden complimented each other.

Pat identified the tree whose leaves i was casting plaster into as a "Paulownia",

and regaled me with a wonderful story about how the species, endemic to China, came to be here.

The Paulownia Tree grows seeds about the size of walnuts, that are so sturdy and light, they were used as packing bubbles before they invented styrofoam. That is why i find these trees especially around train tracks or rivers, where a lot of shipping happened.

By 2012 i had decided the series warranted more than just a single use casting of not so outdoors proof plaster, into seasonally dependent leaves. For being so heavy, they were very fragile.
i decided to make rubber molds that could be used repeatedly, and the pieces could be made of plastic
( poly-urethane, actually ), and custom-colored or pigmented.

i was still using the laundramat washing machine bubble i had been using to form the concave shape of the pieces, and had moved onto aluminum sledding disks, with an even wider diameter.

The biggest problem i had now was that the pieces were so light-weight as to resemble big colorful frisbees,

that wanted to fly away.
